Christiane Baumgartner - White Noise

19.9.2014 - 8.2.2015

Machines and landscapes, speed and standstill – these ostensibly contradictory terms have inspired Christiane Baumgartner time and again. Born in Leipzig in 1967, the artist is interested in man-made environments, in motorways, airplanes, but also in the German forest. For her large-format woodcuts she starts by filming her motif with a video camera, then selects individual images and modifies them on the computer, having defined line grids, which she later transfers onto a wood board. Subsequently, in a time-consuming manual process she cuts the individual lines onto the printing plate.

Christiane Baumgartner’s large-format pictures are a visual invitation to reflect upon our familiar perception of time, space and landscape. By combining antagonistic materials, media and working methods, she achieves a pictorial language which is both irritating and inspiring.
