Art Archive Kaiserswerth

This unusual art archive is situated in the "Old School" of the district of Kaiserswerth and occupies two buildings on the square known as the Stiftsplatz behind the eastern choir of Suitbertus Church. The institution operates under the umbrella of museum kunst palast and is intended to provide a lasting home for photo-artists Prof. Bernd and Hilla Becher, as well as collector Dr Volker Kahmen along with their works. The centrepiece of the Kahmen collection is formed by the paintings by Bruno Goller, while the Bechers’ focus lies in their pioneering "typological photography". The museum kunst palast foundation rents the premises from the City of Dusseldorf, having financed the cost of conversion with the help of a grant from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The complex is being sub-let to the artists, who live and work there and make selected areas of their works available for public viewing.
